Inside Out

Open up your windows,
Let the cold air in.
See the sun is shining outside,
The baby hawk took his first flight.
The areca nut tree is bearing fruit
Wet, mushy berries, intoxicating
They say, but I find them amusing.

Cats spread out so thin,
The dogs they tear at the grass
When was the last time you smelt grass?
Grabbed a bunch and stuffed it under
Your nose, the headiness of childhood
Play, rolling in perfume and mud?

Spring will be here soon,
New flowers blooming
In a new year; it's really been a year
Since the old leaves fell,
Since the old man died,
The one in the wheelchair,
I always smiled, but he was too close,
To death, too unaware
Of the world changing outside.

Open up your windows,
Let the warm air in,
It's no fun living in a house,
With closed windows,
Where no one comes and
No one goes, just you
In those mournsome black clothes.

Don't let it all slip by,
Your days, your nights.
Unfreeze your heart,
Take out your glasses,
And open your scared eyes.
There's still time, for open windows,
And that gorgeous dust floating in,
That will make you sneeze,
That will make you cry.
