Traveller

The cold, hard ground,

Hides pebbles that crunch

Under your worn out boots.

It will be dark soon,

You can feel the warmth

Disappear as the chill sets in.

How many days on the road?

Has it been five already?

Look how far you've come from home.

Home, that place you can't remember too well.

This treacherous terrain feels familiar,

As if you have lived on these slopes before.

Maybe old lives as an old man,

With a crooked hat and a white moustache.

There's an eagle flying up in the blue sky,

So spotless without a cloud of white.

You look up, it looks down at you.

In that moment, you realise

That you have really been here before.

Deja vu or a dream? A parallel world,

Captured in forgotten lines of poetry.

Maybe a comic book where the hero

Travels high up, slips over stones

And grabs the nearest cliff.

You shake your head.

You must focus on the road ahead.

An icy blue lake, like an azure mirror.

Have you been here too?

Is this where the fish died in the winter?

Why can't you escape your thoughts?

Why do you carry them where you go?

Did you leave warm hands and eyes,

To find emptiness and barren lands,

Was the running away your destination,

Or was the escaping your final call?

You sit on a stone, you wait

For your epiphany to arrive.

But it will not come when you want it to.

At night, you light a fire,

To keep your hands from going numb.

In the flames, you see faces

Of friends long gone, of lovers

Who you no longer love,

Of mother, father, children,

And finally of God. He looks like

A blob of yellow, he burns

Like a capsule of time.

Tears of joy fill your tired eyes,

The journey was worth it,

It was all worthwhile.

You close your eyes

And dream of home

That does not exist.

But in your dreams now,

It's green with flowers

And fields of white and gold.

You made it this far,

Someday you'll make it back home,

To the meadows you now wish to see,

To the valleys where you now want to go.

When you wake up,

Everything has changed.

You know you must carry on.

You are sure this is the only way.

A dog barks outside your tent,

It fills you up with love.

You look at the barren hills,

You smile as you move on ahead.

Your worn out boots

Crunch pebbles on the road.

The sun rises out of the trees,

It gets warmer on your face.

You lose count of the days now,

It doesn't matter anyway.

You don't want to reach anywhere,

You're happy just being on the road.

You could go on like this forever,

Like the eagle you envied in the sky,

Belonging nowhere and to no one,

Today here, tomorrow just walking on by.
